Different Types of Welding and When to Use Them

two person Welding

January 16, 2018 by Bob Wilson All manufacturing projects need professional welding since materials need to be manipulated, bent or combined to create specific shapes, such as house frames. Welding techniques depend on the metal being worked and the structure that needs welding. The choice of welding technique is based on how the metal pieces must be attached.

Some methods date back to the late 19th century. Though the techniques are old, new technology has made it possible to use them more efficiently. Method upgrades have been done for the sake of safety and precision. Some of the techniques still in use today are:

  • Arc welding: A low-cost process, arc welding is the most popular technique. It is typically used in mining, sand and gravel digging, oil extraction, etc.

  • Electroslag welding: Another quick process, electroslag welding is used to combine large materials such as thick steel plates.

  • Flux-cored welding: This technique is used in many construction projects because of its fast and automatic system, and also because it works well on different materials.

  • Submerged arc welding: This welding procedure can only be used on materials with high iron content, like stainless steel. It is a quick process; however, the metals will have to be covered by a flux to protect them from the atmosphere.

  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding: Gas is used to protect metals from natural elements such as oxygen during welding. A controlled environment of performing for this technique, so it is usually done indoors.

  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding: Like MIG welding, TIG involves the use of gas to protect the metals being welded. What sets them apart is the equipment used. MIG uses a metal electrode for welding while TIG uses a tungsten current form.

Hiring Certified Welders

Welding plays an essential role in all manufacturing industries. For infrastructure projects to be successful and safe, you must not entrust your welding of materials to just anyone.
